From Misty Mountains to Hidden Villages

Route: Chengdu - Lijiang - Tiger Leaping Gorge - Dali - Yangshuo - Zhaoxing - Chengyang - Ping'an - Hong Kong

This holiday in China is great for those feeling a bit more active who want to get off the well-trodden tourist trail. You'll start your journey in the city of Chengdu where you'll see the majestic giant pandas before heading off to the charming city of Lijiang. From here you'll trek through the impressive Tiger Leaping Gorge then travel onwards to Dali, home of farmland, hills, lakes and mountains.

Next, you'll take a bike ride and bamboo raft trip along the Yulong River in Yanhgshou, with towering karst mountains as your backdrop. From here it's only a short journey into the heart of the Chinese countryside where you'll see wooden houses, narrow streets, lavish drum towers and covered 'wind and rain' bridges. Not many tourists travel into these villages, so it's quite likely you'll be met with plenty of curiosity. Your next stop is to the tumbling rice terraces of Ping'an, some of the worlds highest, before finishing up in the cosmopolitan city of Hong Kong, where east meets west and you'll gradually return to modern life.

Day 2: Chengdu panda tour - Research Centre trip

The best place to see Pandas in China is at the Panda Breeding Research Centre. This is a large bamboo filled park where pandas can be seen in large fenced enclosures. It’s the only opportunity to see these mystical creatures up close.

Of course it’s still a zoo; however it’s a very responsible and well maintained one and seeing these giant creatures is extremely moving. You’ll learn a lot about these animals, their breeding habits, their heritage and you might get to see new-born pandas (depending on the time of year).

Your trip is planned for early in the morning which is the best time of day to visit as this is when they are most active. This means that you’ll be picked up at your hotel around 7am. You’ll get to the park in time to see the pandas being fed. After about 3 hours in the park you’ll have seen all you’ll want to see and you’ll be back in your hotel by 11:30.

Day 3: Chengdu - Lijiang

This morning you'll arrange your own transfer to the airport where you'll catch a flight to Lijiang. Upon arrival a transfer will take you to the ancient city centre called 'old town' or 'Dayan'. This part of Lijiang is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list and is car-free. You’ll be dropped off at the square, the last point where cars are allowed. Our representative will accompany you to your court yard hotel in the ancient centre of the city. The Ancient Town Protection Fee is included in the price of this trip. Keep the payment stub that the representative will give to you as you’ll have to present it every time you enter the ancient city centre.

The centre of Lijiang is exceptionally beautiful in the evening. The small canals, bridges, cobble stone streets and wooden houses are all lit up by red Chinese lanterns.

Day 4: Lijiang – countryside bicycle tour

On day four of your holiday in China, you’ll go on a bike ride in the area around Lijiang. You and your guide will travel out of Lijiang and onto a paved road with snow-capped mountains to the left and right of you. After about 45 minutes you’ll reach the traditional Naxi village of Baisha, where you’ll park your bike and go for a walk through the streets. This village is just as beautiful as Lijiang, only less touristy and more genuine and peaceful.

Just after noon you’ll arrive back in Lijiang and have enough time to freshen up at your hotel before having the rest of the afternoon to spend as you wish. We suggest heading to the Black Dragon Pool Park (approx. 60 Yuan). This spectacular man-made park has a lake that reflects the Jade Snow Mountain tops when the sun is shining.

Day 5: Lijiang - Tiger Leaping Gorge

From Lijiang, you'll head out for your two day trek through Tiger Leaping Gorge. You’ll be collected by your guide at 7:45 and take the public bus towards the starting point about 2 hours away in Qiaotou. Once you arrive at the starting point you'll pay the entrance fee (Y 50) and begin your trek together with your guide. You’ll walk for two hours until you reach the Naxi guest house. This first leg of your hike won’t be easy. You’ll climb quite a bit, however if you have an average level of physical fitness it shouldn’t be a problem. Along the way you’ll find places to stop for a bite to eat or drink, just let your guide know if you would like to have a rest.

Once you reach Halfway Lodge you can take off your shoes and relax in one of the rooms in the wooden building. There’s a heater and warm blankets available, however it can still get quite cold (especially from October - April) so bring warm clothes along for the evening.

Day 6: Tiger Leaping Gorge - Lijiang

On the sixth day of your holiday in China, you’ll walk for another two hours, however it will be much less strenuous than during the first day of your hike as the paths slowly descend. You’ll walk on a level path for about an hour and then pass a plunging waterfall - a scenic part of your trek. After this, the path will go downhill and eventually you’ll reach the road that runs next to the Yangtze River.

This is where you and your guide will take a minibus back to Qiaotou and then a bus back to Lijiang (a two hour drive). The drive is scenic; you’ll pass pine forests at 3000m, glaciers and snowy mountain tops. Since you won’t know for sure what time you’ll return to Qiaotao, the minibus and public bus are not included in the price of the trip. You and your guide will return to Lijiang and you’ll pay for your bus ride on the spot.

Day 7: Lijiang - Dali

After your final night in the same Lijiang hotel you'll wake up early for your bus transfer from your hotel in Lijiang to Dali (approx 4 hours). Near Dali Old Town you'll then board a minibus to your hotel. The trip will take you through a very diverse landscape: wooden houses surrounded by green farmland and forested hills. Look beyond the hills and you'll be able to see the Himalayas. This last part of your holiday in China will take you past the Erhai Lake.

Old town Dali and modern Dali are only about 20 minutes apart from each other. However, the modern part of Dali is busy, with lots of Chinese tourists so we don't recommend staying there. Old town Dali, where you’ll stay, is much more enjoyable to visit.

Day 8: Dali

Today is yours to spend as your wish. You can enjoy a walk through the beautifully lit southern Gate into the walled part of town. Once you pass the walls you’ll find little streets with stores on both sides. Occasionally you’ll see a temple and a beautiful garden. On 'Foreigner Street' you’ll find many fun bars and restaurants. This is where western tourists meet up and share Yunnan travel stories.

Your hotel can give you more information on possible excursions in the area. On Monday mornings there’s a colourful market in Shaping, near Dali and also one at the lake. An English-speaking guide can accompany you to other villages around the lake. Having an English-speaking guide with you will allow you to find out more about life in the area, and means you’ll gain access to places you usually wouldn’t see.

Day 9: Dali - Kunming - Guilin - Yangshuo

The next morning will start early; you'll take the bus to Kunming and continue on to Kunming airport for a domestic flight to Guilin. You will then be collected and transferred to your hotel in Yangshuo. Your accommodation will be a charming retreat surrounded by farmland and rice paddies located between the karst mountains of Yangshuo. The hotel is peaceful and the staff are very friendly and will make you feel right at home. There are mountain bikes, kayaks, bamboo rafts and tubes for rent and naturally this area is great for walking.

Naturally, you'll want to experience this part of your holiday in China in the best possible way. The boat ride offered by most travel organisations from Guilin to Yangshuo, does not do justice to one of the most beautiful areas in China. It involves hours of boats honking their horns and peddlers screaming across the river. That's why we'll take you to Yangshuo overland and you'll experience the area by bicycle and bamboo raft tomorrow.

Day 10: Yangshuo - bike and bamboo raft river excursion

Your day will start with a bike ride along the Yulong River. A real highlight of your holiday in China, the scenery here is extremely beautiful and features a dramatic array of Yangshuo's karst mountains on the banks of the river. You'll leave the main roads and cycle along the river through farmland and rice paddies. You'll be able to stop for drinks or snacks in the small villages that you'll pass during your ride.

After a while, you will find a bamboo raft waiting to take you down the river. After a few kilometres, you'll get back on your bike and cycle towards Moon Hill. You can choose to climb the hill if you wish. In warm temperatures, this could be quite a strenuous climb, however the view from the top makes it worth it. Later, when you return to your hotel, you can unwind with a beer or glass of wine on the terrace and think about the beautiful sights you've seen today.

Day 11: Yangshuo

Today you’ll have the entire day to spend as you please; there's plenty to do in this area. You can rent a kayak from the hotel, spend another day on a bicycle to explore the area on your own, or you can even take Kung Fu lesson for an hour.

In the evening, how about going to the 'Zhang Yimou light show' set along the Li and Yulong rivers. Zhang Yimou is China’s most famous theatre director and is best known for producing the 2008 Olympic Games opening ceremony. He’s created a stunning show complete with illuminated karst formations, gigantic decor and hundreds of actors. This show is truly enjoyable set against a backdrop of Karst Mountains and we would recommend adding it to your travel plan. Just ask one of our friendly travel specialists for more information.

Holiday in China - Zhaoxing

Day 12: Yangshuo - Zhaoxing

Today you'll travel to Zhaoxing, the largest Dong village in China, home of the 'wind and rain' bridges, wooden houses and no less than 5 lavish drum towers. After about an 8-hour journey you'll arrive in Zhaoxing late in the afternoon. It's quite a long drive, but the spectacular surroundings make it worth while. Gradually the karst mountains will disappear and you'll start to see winding mountain roads and rice terraces with small villages scattered between them. Along the way you'll make a short stop in the town of Diping to have a look at the most famous 'wind and rain' bridge. You'll continue to the last part of the trip to Zhaoxing.

Zhaoxing is home to the Dong minority. They are known as some of the best woodworkers, because of their traditional drum towers and 'wind and rain' bridges all built without using nails. The village is made up of 5 different neighbourhoods, each with its own drum tower and ‘wind and rain’ bridge. Zhaoxing is only a short walk away from your hotel and on the other side of the hotel you'll find enormous rice paddies. This is the ideal place to stay during this part of your holiday in China.

Day 13: Zhaoxing - Tang'an and Jitang Villages

This morning you'll begin by visiting two Dong villages near Zhaoxing. The first village is Tang'an, located high up in the mountains and surrounded by colourful rice terraces. The village will give you a spectacular view of the seemingly endless rice paddies. Tang'an's bustling village centre is a square with a large drum tower. While you're here, you can go for a walk up through the village and enjoy the view from the hill. This is the ideal place to take a few pictures, rest your tired feet and simply enjoy the moment. Afterwards you'll head towards the second village, Jitang. This is a slightly larger and more modern Dong village.

Sometime around noon you'll be back in Zhaoxing and you'll have the rest of the afternoon and evening to yourself. Wander through the rice paddies next to the hotel, cross through to the other side of Zhaoxing and visit the new wind and rain bridge. Stroll through the local market or simply sit back and relax at one of the bridges or drum towers and soak up the enchanting atmosphere of authentic China.

Holiday in China - Chengyang

Day 14: Zhaoxing - Chengyang

After your stay in Zhaoxing you'll drive for about 4 hours until you reach Chengyang. On arrival you'll pay a 60 Yuan entrance fee. It won't be long before you notice the village's famous 78m wind and rain bridge. It took the people of this village 12 years to build this bridge! There are two 'Dong shows' performed daily in the village of Ma'an. You and your driver will visit one of these shows in the afternoon. The show is included in the entrance fee that you will have already paid. The villagers will perform in local traditional dress using various musical instruments and dancing. You'll receive a glass of rice tea (which tastes quite good!) and be invited to join them for a dance during the last song. Though you may feel a bit uncomfortable at first, it's certainly a memorable experience to learn the local dance. Afterwards you'll walk through several other Dong villages.

Your hotel is located next to the famous wind and rain bridge, which is illuminated at night. You'll spend the night in a modest, wooden hotel. Don't expect a luxurious hotel room, it's quite basic, yet very well maintained and has a balcony with a beautiful view.

Day 15: Chengyang - Ping'an

The drive from Chengyang to Ping'an should take about 3.5 hours. Along the way you'll visit vast tea fields, where tea pickers collect tea leaves in reed baskets on their backs. After a short stop, you'll continue travelling towards Ping'an.

Your driver will drop you off at the entrance to Ping'an village. The 800 inhabitants of Ping'an live in isolation from the outside world. There are no roads inside the village, you can only get there by walking up the paddies for 20 minutes. If you don’t feel like walking or carrying your luggage up, then you can pay someone to take your luggage up for you. This helps the locals out by bringing more money into their community. You’ll spend two nights in a guest house in the middle of rice paddies. Some rooms overlook the rice paddies themselves, others have a view of the village. There’s electricity and warm water available in the morning and evening.

Day 16: Ping'an travel - hike with a guide

At around 9am you’ll take off with your guide on a walk through some of the world’s highest rice paddies; The Dragon's Back Bone or Long Ji. You’ll climb and descend through marvellous scenic areas, past rivers, through wooded areas and through rice paddies. You’ll pass several villages, most of them nothing more than a few houses built on poles, with friendly, curious inhabitants who will treat you to their biggest, brightest smiles when you pass.

This trek will take about 5 hours. If the weather is bad or if you don't feel like walking the entire 5 hours, there are also shorter treks available during this holiday in China. In the evening, the Zhuang will show you their singing and dancing traditions at your request. Afterwards travellers usually gather on the veranda to sit, talk, drink or play a game until late in the evening.

Day 17: Ping'an - Guilin - Guangzhou - Hong Kong

Start off the day by enjoying the magical sunrise and the silence of the morning. The shrouds of mist surrounding the mountains will gradually pull away and while you have your breakfast on the veranda you'll see the sun climb into the sky. When time has come to move on, you'll take your baggage to the car park where a transfer will be waiting to take you to Guilin airport (a 1.5 hour drive).

You'll continue your holiday in China as you fly to the city of Guangzhou (Canton), which lies near Hong Kong. This flight is much less expensive than flying directly into Hong Kong. A transfer will be waiting to take you to the Guangzhou train station. Your train ride to Kowloon i9n Hong Kong will take another 2 hours. On arrival in Hong Kong you will arrange your own transfer to your hotel.

Holiday in China - Hong Kong

Day 18: Hong Kong

Our most popular hotel lies in the central district of Tsimshatsui on the southern point of Kowloon where you'll find the famous shopping street, Nathan Road. This is our standard hotel choice for this holiday in China - unless you indicate that you would like a room with a view of the impressive Hong Kong skyline from the luxurious Harbour View Hotel - our upgrade option. You'll spend two nights in Hong Kong and you'll have the day after arrival free to spend as you wish.

Please note: despite the large number of hotels in Hong Kong, there is a shortage of hotel rooms during the Christmas holidays and during the month of October (the month in which many conventions are held in Hong Kong). Prices for rooms are higher than normal during this period of time.

Day 19: Hong Kong - Home

If your flight home is in the afternoon or evening you might have some time to check out a few more of Hong Kong's attractions. You could take the ferry in Kowloon and then the trolley to Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island. This is where you'll be able to enjoy the magnificent view of the Hong Kong skyline.

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, and today this holiday in China must draw to a close. Today you'll return to the airport (you can arrange a transfer at your hotel reception for just a few pounds) and catch your flight back to the UK.
