Easy Going Shanghai: Back to the Future

Route: Shanghai

When travelling through a country you've never visited before, your expectations are often based on what you’ve seen in films, on TV, or what you’ve read in books. Shanghai is a bit more complex. Start off with a pinch of Hong Kong, a dash of Manhattan's towering skyscrapers and a touch of Rotterdam's harbour, all topped off with a bustling Asian atmosphere and you’ve got Shanghai.

Shanghai is quite a cosmopolitan cocktail; no other city in the world features starker contrasts between east and west and rich and poor. Just beyond the broad modern avenues, small streets seem to create paths to past centuries.

If you'd like to start building your China holiday, take a look at our bite-sized China trips. Or alternatively, choose from one of our ready-made holidays in China.

Day 1: Arrival in Shanghai

When you arrive into Shanghai you will be collected at the airport. The airport you will be collected from depends on if you are arriving by domestic or international flight.

After you collect your baggage, one of our representatives will be waiting for you in the arrival hall. He or she will have your name on a sign and your Shanghai trip will begin.

If you are arriving into Shanghai by train then this is absolutely fine, we will arrange a transfer for you from the train station instead.

Shanghai trip - Your hotel in Shanghai

You’ll stay in a colonial hotel on this Shanghai trip. The historic atmosphere has been maintained by keeping the wooden floors and the cables that help support the roof. The location is ideal at Suzhou Creek at only a stones throw from the Bund. In the evening simply walk out of the hotel and you’ll be on Shanghai boulevard, the Bund.

The hotel has a restaurant and an Internet cafe and all the rooms have air conditioning, TV and high ceilings. You may want to prepare yourself for the hard beds; unfortunately this is quite common in China. Transport into the city is best done by taxi as it is quite cheap for short journeys. You can also take the metro, however it’s best to avoid the chaotic city buses. There is bar/restaurant terrace near your hotel with a spectacular view of the Bund (which is illuminated until 23:00) and the Pudong skyline.

Day 2: Shanghai

On day two of your Shanghai trip you can really explore this city. Walking past the large classic colonial buildings, which you’ll be doing along with quite a few Chinese, you’ll get an impression of 18th and 19th century. In those days Shanghai traded with the French, Portuguese and Dutch free harbours (concessions), but trade was bound to very strict rules.

These days there are few rules and trade is booming. International fashion stores and yuppie bars are found side by side in beautifully renovated buildings, such as the famous Peace hotel. You can find watches here that cost the same as a Chinese mid-size car or you can buy the latest popular cheaper versions for about £3.

Shanghai trip - Shanghai Skyscrapers

Across from the Bund, Pudong’s skyscrapers shoot into the sky.

This is Shanghai’s Manhattan, where buildings shoot into the sky in a fury of building rage. The motto here is: "To become rich is glorious". The old Chinese street lanterns in the Bund now compete in the unfair struggle against the small bundled laser lights coming from Pudong’s business district.

Take the psychedelic Bund Tourist tunnel (approx. 30 RMB) to Pudong and you can admire the Bund from the other side of the river. You can take a cheaper ferry ride back after you’re done sight-seeing on day two of your Shanghai trip.

Culture
A popular, yet hectic, tourist attraction is the Jade Buddha temple (Yufo Si). If you only want to visit one museum during your Shanghai trip, visit the museum at the Renmin (Peoples) Square. The enormous overview of anything Chinese is enough to get lost in. You can also get lost while walking past the ultramodern buildings at Century Road or in the art district at the MoganshanLu at Suzhou Creek. Chinese elite call this Shanghai’s Seine.

Shopping
One of the side streets of the Bund, the shopping street Nanjing Donglu, competes with the Weifujing in Beijing. The entire centre of the city is packed with people. Whoever shops here does so in the midst of a great many of the Chinese mid-class with newly found spending power and who have some catching up to do.

Going out
Going out in the evenings on your Shanghai trip is a part of the Shanghai experience. The best place to go out in the evening is in the old French district which is filled with balconies, large trees and beautiful old facades. In the midst of Shanghai’s concrete jungle this part of Shanghai is wonderfully European.

There’s no shortage of bars and clubs in this area and going out China style is a unique experience. Another area that’s known for its enjoyable nightlife is Xintiandee, a district of pedestrian streets filled with tea houses, restaurants and renovated Shikumen houses. This is one of the few areas in Shanghai where traffic is less congested and chaotic.

Day 3: Departure from Shanghai

You’ll need at least two days on your Shanghai trip to truly experience this unforgettable city (an extra night stay is always possible). Depending on your travel plans, you’ll either check out and fly back to the UK or continue on to your next Chinese destination. If you take an international flight to or from Shanghai, you’ll depart from Pudong Airport. Transportation from Shanghai to Pudong Airport is quite extraordinary; you can take the fastest train in the world, the German Maglev (a magnetic high-speed miracle racing an amazing 400km per hour). Alternatively you can grab a taxi to take you to the airport.

If you’re hungry for more Chinese experiences, take the boat to Putuoshan Island to relax on some China beaches, or take a trip from Shanghai to explore Zen gardens and waterways.
