In the afternoon you'll take a taxi cab to Tian'anmen Square, the Gateway to Heavenly Peace (a taxi will cost approximately £1.50). There are buildings of parliament on the square as well as Mao Zhedong's Mausoleum, China's infamous one-time leader, and you'll also find the entrance of the Forbidden City here. For centuries this was the city (entrance fee approximately £6) where Chinese emperors lived in seclusion from the 'real' world and where they lead the country. While strolling through the residences of emperors stemming from the 18th century, you'll feel like you're walking through the movie 'The Last Emperor'. In the morning the city is filled with Chinese tour groups and the city closes its gates at 16.00. If you enter the city at around 14:30 you'll have 2.5 hours to look around. You can rent an audio tour with a Roger Moore voice-over for approximately £4. There is a canal surrounding the city that is used for ice skating, sleighing and recreation in the winters. Once you've seen all you want to see, you'll catch a taxi cab to your hotel. In the evening you can kick up your heals in the Hou Hai Lake district. |
Day 2: Beijing - Great Wall of China excursionThe Great Wall of China should be a part of every Southern China itinerary. It isn't until you actually walk over the wall that you can get a sense of the vastness of this unique Chinese heritage site. We'll make arrangements for you to go on an excursion to the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu. You'll be able to walk over the wall for about 3km and eventually you'll return to where your walk started on the wall. This part of the wall has been restored and you'll be walking over a path; however if the path is slippery you'll have to be careful and walk slowly. You'll be able to enjoy the fantastic view all around you and for a little while you'll forget all about the modern western world and you'll feel at one with the era of Chinese emperors and the great Chinese dynasties. |

Day 3: Beijing - Xi'anToday on your southern China itinerary you'll have a day free in Beijing. After your walk on the Great Wall of China yesterday, your muscles may be a bit stiff. If you'd like to spend the day in peace and quiet, you may want to take a taxi cab to Beihei City Park to visit one of the remaining classical Chinese gardens. You'll see Chinese doing Tai Chi, singing in groups or playing Mah-jong here. The entrance fee is £1. If you're looking for a more active way to spend the day you can go for a walk or bike ride through Beijing's historic neighbourhoods, the hutongs. |
Day 4: Arrival in Xi'anYou'll be awakened from your slumber before arriving in Xi'an (if you prefer not to travel by train, there are several daily flights to Xi'an). We'll make reservations for you in a centrally located, comfortable hotel. You'll be greeted in the arrival hall and taken straight to your hotel. The transfer should take approximately 15 minutes. The rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish. Stroll across the boulevards to the heart of the city, the large Bell Tower. Nearby you'll also find the Drum Tower. If you climb the tower around 17:00 you'll have a wonderful view of the city and you'll catch a demonstration of Chinese kettle drums. The Muslim neighbourhood is quite fun to visit for dinner in the evening. A taxi cab (or take a tuk-tuk) back to your hotel will cost about 1 or 2 pounds. |

They found approximately 7000 clay soldiers, clay horses and clay chariots, which were commissioned by the then 14 year old king Zheng for his future royal tomb. Sometime in the afternoon you'll head for Xi'an airport and you'll fly to the karst mountain area in Guilin. He’s created a show here in the outdoors with a backdrop of mountains and the river that attracts about 1000 visitors each and every night. The surrounding mountains are part of a magnificent light show every night during the performance. The show can be viewed daily from 20:00 - 21:00. Tickets are on sale on location from £15. After the show you may want to venture out for some souvenir shopping or have a bite to eat in one of Yangshuo's busy streets. |

The village Ping'an is located in the middle of this area and is only accessible by foot. You'll be awaited at the end of the drive and someone will join you on the 20 minute walk to the village. If you prefer not to carry your suitcase/ backpack during the walk, you can have your baggage carried for 30 Yuan. By lunchtime you'll reach the village of 800 inhabitants. |
Day 9: Ping'an - hike with a guideAt 9:00 you’ll take off with your guide on a walk through the world’s largest rice paddies, The Dragon's Bone or Long Ji. |
Along the way you're bound to encounter the Zhuang. They were responsible for introducing the terraced irrigation system used for rice cultivation in this area more than 5000 years ago. In the evening, the Zhuang will show you their singing and dancing traditions at your request. The Zhuang perform a type of folk dancing for Chinese country women in traditional dress. Afterwards travellers usually gather on the veranda to sit, talk, drink or play a game until late in the evening. If you stay in an accommodation in this area you'll see shrouds of mist floating across the mountains in the morning, during the day you can walk or relax in this beautiful area and in the evening you can watch magical sunsets behind the mountains before spending a fun evening with the locals or a quiet evening on the veranda by moonlight. This was one of the most relaxing places we visited during the Southern China itinerary. |
