Another highlight of a trip to Lijiang is to see how the Naxi minority live. You'll notice that their houses are decorated with beautifully crafted woodwork, doors and window frames. The Naxi live in a Matriarch society, which means that the woman is the head of the family. However, the most unique characteristic of the Naxi minority is that they are the last people in the world to still use hieroglyphic writing. The hard-working Naxi women make a living by selling goods at the markets in Lijiang. You will see them selling tea, medicinal herbs, and other items at the markets in Lijiang during your trip to China. The Naxi men are known as excellent horse breeders and they are also known for falcon hunting. If you look around you’ll see that many Naxi men carry these predators on their shoulders as pets. |

The centre of Lijiang is exceptionally beautiful in the evening. The small canals, bridges, cobble stone streets and wooden houses are all lit up by red Chinese lanterns. During one of these mystical evenings, you can walk over to the concert building where there are frequent classical Tao temple music recitals. It's a Naxi tradition that almost disappeared when all musical instruments were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. The most popular musical group is lead by ‘Xuan Ke', a local hero. He revived the tradition together with elderly musicians and instruments. |

After about 45 minutes you’ll reach the traditional Naxi village of Baisha, where you’ll park your bike and go for a walk through the streets. This village is just as beautiful as Lijiang, only less touristy and more genuine and peaceful. |

Day 3: Departure from Lijiang Today you can enjoy the sunshine on your hotel’s patio before this Lijiang China trip comes to an end. About a four hour drive south along a breathtaking road, you could begin a real Yunnan travel experience with a China adventure to the Bai villages in Dali.If you'd like to explore more of the Yunnan province, you could go on a China trek at the Tiger Leaping Gorge. This gorge is one of the best locations in China for trekking. You’ll walk along the top of the gorge on a path where you will be able to see the Yangtze River flowing below you. Alternatively, you can fly to one of the most beautiful areas in China, the Karst Mountains. During this trip from Guilin to Yangshuo you can admire the breath-taking scenery whilst you sail on a bamboo boat trip along the Yulong River. |
An hours drive away from Lijiang lies the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain which is 5500m high. If you decide to visit the mountain during this trip to China, we can arrange for you to spend an extra night in Lijiang. You’ll need to bring money for all of the entrance fees and cable cars, this works out at about 400 Yuan. Nowhere else in the world will you climb as quickly and to such heights as in these cable cars. Oxygen bottles can be purchased at the foot of the gondolas. |
